    2007 SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS RECIPIENTS
 

$500 Awarded
 

Rachel Beck was born in Anchorage, Alaska on 1989. Her family moved to Oregon in 1990. She is currently a senior at Southridge High School, but will attend the University of Oregon in the fall of 2007. As a freshman she plans to focus her studies on science and math in hopes of majoring in biological sciences in her later years.  Rachel aspires to have a future career as a pediatrician, dermatologist, or optometrist. This is Rachel’s first year of involvement with AAYLC, and is also her first year applying for the scholarship. Rachel has been a part of many volunteering services and plans to do more for her community in the future. 



 


$500 Awarded

Huyen Hoang
is a graduating senior at Madison High School. She is a first generation Vietnamese-American who immigrated to America five years ago with her family to Portland, Oregon. She has been a member of the National Honor Society, Key Club and Aspire program. She also volunteers at the Grotto Festival of lights, Legacy Emmanuel Hospital, High School Clean Up, Habitat for Humanity, and at Madison as a peer tutor. She participates in activities with the Vietnamese Student Association during Lunar New Year events. This coming fall she will attend Concordia University in Portland, Oregon pursuing her bachelor’s degree in nursing. Becoming a nurse will help her fulfill her dream of helping others.

“Receiving this scholarship is a great honor to me as well as my family. I am so happy to be selected as a recipient of a 2007 Asian American Youth Leadership Conference (AAYLC). AAYLC will assist me in obtaining my college education and achieving my career goals that include my continued involvement in community service.” She said.

She also expressed, “I appreciate Asian American Youth Leadership Conference and its generous sponsors for giving me the opportunity to recognize my hard work during my four years at Madison High School. I believe every penny from this scholarship will help me pave a part of my future dream.”
