Helen Xun:
Sunset High School
| |
Helen Xun is a
junior at Sunset High School, and was born in Provo, Utah. She is a
philanthropist, and dreams of traveling with Medical Teams International
to third world countries to provide medical relief. Through this belief,
she became the co-president and founder of Sunset’s philanthropy club,
Sunset Saves the World (Medical Teams International). The success of
this club and her work with MTI and Invisible Children has inspired
several other schools to start their own philanthropy based clubs. She
is also a co-founder of Westview High School’s MTI.
Helen is an active member of National Honor’s Society, Key Club, Link
Crew, Junto Society, Multicultural Club, Model United Nations, and
Student Government, where she is the 2008 – 2009 ASB Clubs and
Committees Director. She is the founder and president of Esporsi, her
school’s Christian club, and regularly attends and volunteers at Chinese
Evangelical Church’s youth group and Chinese Language School. Helen has
also won numerous awards, including the Marketing Award for her school,
and the Oregonian Design-An-Ad competition. Outside of school, Helen is
a talented violinist. Although she was a late starter, her talent
enabled her to enter Portland Youth Philharmonic, America’s first and
most prestigious youth orchestra, and was the winner of the OMTA
Concerto competition, and placed in the top five of Oregon’s MTNA
Concerto competition.
Helen prides herself as an IB Diploma Candidate, currently enrolled in
five IB classes (4 HL, 1 SL) this year, and seven next year. She is a
mathematician, taking IB Calculus HL as a junior, and was placed in the
state’s top 15 mathletes of the year. She loves the English language,
and has volunteered over 50 hours at a local elementary school as an
English tutor, and is now employed at BrainChild.
This will be Helen’s second year at the Asian American Youth Leadership
Conference, and her first as an ambassador. She is excited to represent
Sunset High School, and hopes to encourage others to give back to the
community.
