Noel Poovaviranon:
Southridge High School

Noel (Angel) Poovaviranon is currently a senior at Southridge High School and is planning her first year of college attending Portland State University, later fulfilling her undergraduate program at Oregon State University, and dreams of attending a descent medical school such as Oregon Health Sciences University. She is interested in expanding her knowledge in the medical and psychology field; wishing to become a successful dermatologist or pediatrician in the future. Noel is full Chinese however she considers herself Thai. Her parents were born and raised in Thailand and Noel was raised the same way; she speaks Thai fluently and grew up with the Thai culture, except all was done in Beaverton/Tigard, Oregon. Of course she will never forget her Chinese background.

In Noel’s leisure time she enjoys helping out the community, attending her fun extra-curriculum activities, and greatly loves getting a good exercise. Noel is active in her volunteering participation; she volunteers at the Beaverton City Library during the summers, occasional events, and with the Teen Library Council meetings since September 2008. A special talent that Noel is very proud of is her Thai dancing. She started Thai dancing since she was 3 to 4 years old, and grew up loving it with a passion; now she is also a member of the Thai Association of Oregon. Being associated with this non-profit organization, she goes out with her group dancers and performs fundraising events, including the Tsunami hit in Thailand 2004. And last of all, Noel’s favorite hobby is Taekwondo. She loves getting a good work out, and Taekwondo is a way to go. She challenges herself by attending tournaments, competing in the divisions of formation, sparring, and martial arts weapons (Bo staff, nunchakus, and sais).

Throughout your whole life experiences, Noel believes being able to engage your leadership skills to the real life is very important. It applies to all areas in life; family, school, work, etc. She attended the AAYLC once and definitely enjoyed it; this year Noel is coming back as a proud ambassador representing Southridge High School, continuing to meet many more Asian-Americans of her kind.
