STUDENT AMBASSADOR 2009

Samantha Chan:
International School of Beaverton

Samantha is currently a junior at the International School of Beaverton and enrolled in the International Baccalaureate Program. She has been a student there since the school opened in 2006. She has been on student leadership for three years now and hopes to be elected onto parliament for her senior year. This year, she is part of Dragon Crew (members at large who work with the parliament) and the National Art Honor Society. Samantha enjoys being at the International School and likes to learn new and interesting things. She is planning on studying pharmacology and design in the future. Samantha also has fun coming up with new ideas and dreams to someday design shoes and apparel for Nike. She wants to make a change in the world and tries to do as much community service as she can.

Samantha is also a competitive figure skater and has been skating for the last 7 years. In her free time, she loves to spend time with family and friends. She also enjoys going to movies with friends. Traveling is another favorite for her. She has been to many parts of the United States and is going to Europe this Spring Break. Samantha is really excited for this opportunity to learn about and experience a whole new culture.

Samantha’s parents were both born in Vietnam and lived there throughout most of their teenage years. During the Vietnam War, they left their home to look for new opportunities. Her mother and her uncle left Vietnam with only the clothes on their backs. They first went to Hong Kong where they worked for a while. Samantha’s father left Vietnam to go to Malaysia. The three were sponsored to come to America and left at the same time. Her mother and father then met each other here in Portland. Samantha was born in Portland, Oregon and has been living in this area for the past 17 years. She has two older brothers.

This is her first year participating in the Asian American Youth Leadership Conference and also being an ambassador. She is excited for this opportunity to represent the International School of Beaverton and collaborate with other enthusiastic Asian-American students to make a difference.
