Teresa Vu:
Lincoln High School
| |
Teresa Vu, currently a junior at Lincoln
High School, plans to attend Portland State University after graduation
in 2010. She was born in San Jose, California two years after her
parents migrated from Vietnam in 1990. Teresa grew up with her three
older brothers, but she now resides in Oregon with her sister and
brother-in-law. Growing up bilingual, she spoke both English and
Vietnamese, which ignited her passion to be an active part of the
Vietnamese Community. Beginning an interest in student leadership, she
joined the Vietnamese Student Association (VSA), which worked to
strengthen outreach in the Asian Community and fundraise for
organizations in Vietnam. The experience to meet other Asian Americans
in a leadership setting was both educational and fun.
As a member of the Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC),
Teresa gained leadership skills through attending camp, organizing
events, torturing middle school students, and volunteering at marathons.
Discipline was taught along with practice and persistence towards
completing assigned tasks, memorizing movements and ranks.
Although not old enough to vote, Teresa gained political experience as a
campaign canvasser for her local Vietnamese city council candidate.
Aside from school activities and community work, she loves to ride her
bike through Portland exploring the city and bake for her family
whenever she gets a chance. On occasions, she plans to meet with her
friends to play tennis.
Teresa has always been interested in science and health courses as well
as interacting with children, so with this, she aims to become a
pediatric dentist. By working hard, she hopes to work with children in
the field of dentistry.
This will be her first year participating in the AAYLC, and she finds it
a great opportunity to broaden her horizon and to meet others from
diverse cultural backgrounds. She will use the knowledge and leadership
skills gained from this experience and apply it in college.
