    2009 SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS RECIPIENTS

$1,500 Awarded

Valerie Chai is a senior at Sunset High School and a first-time attendee of the AAYLC. Valerie hopes to attend either MIT or Princeton University to become an engineer. She has taken up several leadership roles in her school and in her community. An avid mathematician, Valerie regularly competes in local and national math competitions. She plans to spend the summer as a counselor at the Awesome Math Summer Program teaching competition math concepts and strategies to middle and high-school students.

Valerie is also active in the community. As the 2008-2009 President of her school's Key Club, she coordinated projects every week for 150+ members of the club, and she helped foster leadership in her peers through service. At the Pacific NW District Convention, she competed in the oratorical contest, speaking in front of nearly 1,600 people about 'What Makes a Superhero of Service' and the importance of leadership. Valerie took first place and will be representing the entire Pacific NW at the International Convention this summer in Dallas, TX. In addition, Valerie plays table tennis competitively and is involved in Speech and Debate and Model United Nations

Valerie believes that Asian American Youth have a unique opportunity to change the world, and she wants to use her leadership skills to do so. As the third-largest minority, she believes that Asian Americans can inspire other minorities with their achievements. Valerie is honored to be considered for this prestigious award and hopes to continue to motivate and encourage her peers to work hard to achieve their dreams.

$1,000 Awarded

Kimberly Young is a senior from Southridge High School and will attend the University of Oregon this fall. She will attend the Robert D. Clark Honors College to further her academic curiosity beyond the International Baccalaureate Program. Graduating with full honors, Kimberly has been involved with the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, National Forensics League, and most importantly, Asian Culture Club. Upon entering high school, Kimberly discovered the lack of recognition towards the Asian culture and in response, initiated the Asian Culture Club her sophomore year to promote diversity.

Whether volunteering to tutor Beaverton District staff in Spanish language acquisition or training novice learners of individual events in Speech and Debate, Kimberly has volunteered over 400 hours in community service and international projects. She plans to continue her community involvement in Eugene. She already plans to participate within the Hong Kong Student Association.

Kimberly feels encouraged by the AAYLC's recognition of her accomplishments, and will aspire to inspire those around her in her future. Grateful for the opportunity through AAYLC, Kimberly will strive for both academic and extracurricular excellence.

This scholarship was in partnership with the generous donation from PGE/Asian American Pacific Islander Network.
